Agriculture and Energy
Velva is at the heart of North Dakota’s growing and diversified traditional and value-added agriculture production.   North Dakota’s major industry is agriculture; 38 percent of its economic base is attributed to the sector, and approximately 89 percent of the state is comprised of farmland.

Technological advances in agriculture have increased the amount of land that one farmer can efficiently operate while creating better environmental practices. The state is the country’s leading producer of many crops, including durum wheat, barley, other spring wheat, sunflowers, and all dry edible beans.

With this diversity and opportunity, Velva is host to many agriculture technology focused businesses including Agro-Tech Inc. a locally owned business located in the north central North Dakota.  Established in 1996, they specialize in providing contract research services for the agricultural sector. Agro-Tech provides field research services for more than 45 multinational companies.

Production agriculture facilities including SunPrairie Grain, and Dakota Midland Grain Elevators along several seed and chemical companies continue to grow the production agriculture industries.

Energy production takes many faces in the Velva region. North Dakota is the number one state in the U.S. for wind-energy potential. The Velva Wind Farm, north of town, was one of the first ACCIONA projects to seize that opportunity and bring clean energy to the grid. Velva might be ACCIONA’s smallest North American wind farm, but proof that good things come in small packages. South of Velva additional wind tower locations have been sighted.

Clean energy in the form of biodiesel production has also been a major emphasis. The ADM Biodiesel Production facility east of Velva in the industrial park is a project which sustained the facility and added new jobs. The 85 million-gallon facility is located adjacent to ADM’s existing canola seed crushing facility, and uses canola oil and is the largest the nation’s largest canola-based biodiesel plant. Traditional energy development and resources, including Verendrye Electric and Basin Electric have homes in and around Velva.

Oil production is booming in North Dakota and Velva and McHenry County sit on the edge. Providing the people to work in the industry and the skills needed to grow in the businesses is a major focus of the community and VCDC. More information on oil and North Dakota can be found at
